Avs top Canadiens 6-5 in shootout

…The Canadiens trailed 4-3 before Gionta put a backhander past Varlamov to tie it 12:57 into the third. Desharnais deflected Pacioretty’s pass into the right side of the net for his first goal of the season 50 seconds later, triggering a roar from the sellout crowd of 21,273 at the Bell Center.
“It was a roller-coaster,” Price said. “I thought the guys played well and deserved better. It was a tough one for me tonight, obviously, with five goals. I wish I would have played better but at least we got a point out of it. We can move forward with that, I guess.”
Jones set up Kobasew’s first goal with Colorado in the opening period, then scored twice in the second. He tied it 2-2 at 11:37 with a power-play wrister off a pass from Erik Johnson, then gave the Avs a 4-3 lead at 18:42.
Stastny made it 3-2 with an unassisted goal 54 seconds after Jones’ first tally, stripping P.K. Subban at center ice and beating Price on a breakaway with a backhander through the pads.
“I saw the puck was in my range and just made a quick poke at it and went with it,” Stastny said.
Moen tied it 3-3 at 15:51 into the second when he took Gionta’s pass and drove down the left side before beating Varlamov inside the left post.

Adam, Gerbe lead Sabres past Pens

Nearly every Buffalo Sabres trip to Pittsburgh of recent vintage has ended with the same result — a loss created by one of the Penguins’ multiple stars.
With Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin both out of the Penguins’ lineup again early in the season, this became a fortuitous time for Buffalo to travel to perhaps its least-favorite city.
Luke Adam and Nathan Gerbe each scored a goal and set up another, Jhonas Enroth made 30 saves in his first start this season and the Sabres rebounded from a home-opener loss one night before to defeat the offense-thin Penguins 3-2 on Saturday at the Consol Energy Center.
“Obviously those guys are two of the best players in the League,” Enroth said of the missing Crosby and Malkin. “They’re going to be good when those guys get back.”

Buffalo remains perfect
October 18, 2006

Thomas Vanek had two goals and two assists, and Derek Roy scored twice for the Sabres (6-0), who posted a six-goal second period and are two wins shy of matching their best start set in 1975.
Buffalo has also won 11 straight regular-season games, tying the franchise record established 21 years ago.
Also scoring for the Sabres were Chris Drury, who extended his point streak to six games (seven goals and three assists), Jiri Novotny, Jaroslav Spacek , and Henrik Tallinder. Buffalo had its biggest offensive output since a 10-1 win over Los Angeles last January.
