Sabres’ Reinhart set for NHL debut vs. Blue Jackets

Season Series: The Columbus Blue Jackets won two of three games against the Buffalo Sabres during the 2013-14 season thanks largely to the efforts of Brandon Dubinsky, who scored two goals and an assist in the three games. The Sabres did win the most recent game, however, snapping a franchise-record eight-game winning streak for Columbus.

Blue Jackets team scope: Columbus made significant strides last season by winning a Stanley Cup Playoff game for the first time in franchise history, but issues surround the team as it opens the 2014-15 season. The biggest question mark might be forward Ryan Johansen, who was recently re-signed to a three-year contract after tense and public negotiations that caused him to miss training camp and the preseason. Johansen practiced Wednesday and said he feels ready to play, but coach Todd Richards said the forward’s status is still uncertain for the season opener. At the same time, health is already a problem for the Blue Jackets. With forwards Nathan Horton, Boone Jenner and defenseman Ryan Murray already on injured reserve, they announced Wednesday that Dubinsky will miss approximately six weeks following abdominal surgery.

Sabres team scope: The Sabres will get a glimpse of their future on opening night as Sam Reinhart, the No. 2 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, will be in the lineup. Reinhart, who practiced Wednesday on a line with Cody Hodgson and Brian Gionta, can be returned to his junior team without burning a year of his entry-level contract as long as he doesn’t play more than nine games. Gionta, who was named captain on Tuesday, will also be making his debut for Buffalo after signing a three-year contract as a free agent this summer. A native of western New York, Gionta was captain of the Montreal Canadiens during their run to the 2014 Eastern Conference Final last season.
