A review of the last three mock drafts

This is a review of the last three mock drafts. Players in bold were picked in the mock and drafted by Buffalo.  They are Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart, Brendan Lemieux, Eric Cornel, Rasmus Ristolainen, J.T. Compher and Nick Baptiste.

2015 Mock Draft

1.2

Jack Eichel                          Drafted by Buffalo 2nd overall                                    Buffalo NHL – 81  24-32-56  -16  22

No complaints.

1.21                                        Sabres traded pick to Ottawa for Robin Lehner and David Legwand

Colin White                         Drafted by Ottawa 21st overall                                    Boston College – 34  19-22-41 23  44

Jakub Zboril                        Drafted by Boston 13th overall                                    Saint John (Q) – 50  6-14-20  10  57

Brock Boeser                     Drafted by Vancouver 23rd overall                            North Dakota – 38  25-26-51  35  26

I won’t like this trade until Robin Lehner cements himself as a strong starting goalie whom is capable of backstopping the Sabres to some playoff series wins. Colin White and Brock Boeser both had very strong freshman campaigns in the NCAA. Their futures are incredibly bright. Too early to say Sabres general manager Tim Murray whiffed… time will tell.

2.31                                        Sabres traded pick to Colorado in the big Ryan O’Reilly acquisition

Jake DeBrusk                     Drafted by Boston 14th overall                                    S. Curr / Red Deer – 63  21-44-65  10  47

Jack Roslovic                      Drafted by Winnipeg 25th overall                               Miami of Ohio – 36  10-16-26  -5  18

Nicholas Meloche            Drafted by Colorado 40th overall                                                Baie-Comeau – 53  13-20-33  -2  92

This trade worked out very well for the Sabres. Ryan O’Reilly became one of the best players on the team in his first season with Buffalo. Still a young player, he will be among the most identifiable players on the team for the next five plus seasons. Jack Roslovic was actually drafted with what was a Sabres first round pick. It was moved in the Evander Kane trade.

2.52                                        Sabres drafted Brendan Guhle  (pick was actually 51st overall)

Prince Albert – 63-10-18-28 -5 53

Dennis Yan                          Drafted by Tampa Bay 64th overall                            Shawinigan – 62  32-37-69  8  86

Jonas Siegenthaler          Drafted by Washington 57th overall                          Zurich (SUI) – 40  3-5-8  16  28

Matt Spencer                    Drafted by Tampa Bay 44th overall                            Peterborough – 60  5-19-24  -4  46

The Sabres made the right selection with Guhle. Dennis Yan had a strong season in the Quebec league.

4.92                                        Sabres drafted Will Borgen                                         St. Cloud State – 37-1-13-14 17 36

David Cotton                      Drafted by Carolina 169th overall                                Waterloo (USHL) – 46  15-14-29  -13  32

Loik Leveille                        Undrafted                                                                           Cape Breton – 61  16-31-47  12  68

Roope Hintz                       Drafted by Dallas 49th overall                                       Helsinki – 33  12-18-30  15  4

5.122                                     Sabres drafted Devante Stephens                           Kelowna – 72-2-9-11 12 58

Keegan Kolesar                 Drafted by Columbus 69th overall                              Seattle – 64  30-31-61  10  107

Jesse Gabrielle                  Drafted by Boston 105th overall                                  Prince George – 72  40-35-75  4  101

Kevin Stenlund                 Drafted by Columbus 58th overall                              HV71 – 15  1-0-1  -2  14

Jesse Gabrielle was selected 17 spots ahead of the Sabres. During the 2014-15 season he was viewed as an immature player, albeit a talented one.  He grew up this past season and scored 40 goals for the Prince George Cougars.

6.152                                     Sabres drafted Giorgio Estephan                              Lethbridge – 59-30-44-74 26 12

Sam Wenner                      Undrafted                                                                           LaCrosse Freeze – 18  7-15-22  16  59

Christopher Mastomaki                Undrafted                                                                           Lulea – 47  4-4-8  12  12

Connor Ingram                  Undrafted                                                                           Kamloops – 61  34-15-9  2.62 .922  4

The Sabres drafted the right player… although maybe we haven’t heard the end of Connor Ingram.

7.182                                     Sabres drafted Ivan Chukarov                                    UMass – 36-3-5-8 -17 10

I didn’t do a mock for this pick because the pick was in question at the time. Sabres traded a 7th round pick to Winnipeg for Jordan-Samuels Thomas. It was a conditional pick and JST didn’t reach the condition. Buffalo retained the pick.

2014 Mock Draft

1.2

Sam Reinhart                     Drafted by Buffalo 2nd overall                                    Buffalo NHL – 79  23-18-41  -8  8

Sam Bennett                      Drafted by Calgary 4th overall                                      Calgary NHL – 77  18-18-36  -11  37

Aaron Ekblad                     Drafted by Florida 1st overall                                       Florida NHL – 78  15-21-36  18  41

Wrong Sam became Right Sam. Like the Eichel selection, it was a no-brainer. The young duo will be Buffalo’s focal points at forward for the next decade.

2.31

Connor Bleackley             Drafted by Colorado 23rd overall                                                Red Deer – 55  13-33-46  13  49

Anton Karlsson                 Drafted by Phoenix 87th overall                                  SHL and Allsv – 40  2-8-10  3  8

Brendan Lemieux            Drafted by Buffalo 31st overall                                   Bar / WSR OHL – 45  32-30-62  19  65

Connor Bleackley has regressed since his draft year. Brendan Lemieux was selected by Buffalo but traded away in the Evander Kane deal.

2.39

Jack Glover                         Drafted by Winnipeg 69th overall                               Univ. of Minn – 36  3-8-11 13  24

Eric Cornel                          Drafted by Buffalo 44th overall                                  Peterborough – 68  27-56-83  19  18

John Quenneville             Drafted by New Jersey 30th overall                           Brandon WHL – 57  31-42-73  28  71

Sabres moved down five spots from 39 and selected Eric Cornel. He recently signed an entry-level contract with the Sabres. Jack Glover became a more important player for the Minnesota Golden Gophers this past season.

2.49                                        Sabres drafted Vaclav Karabacek                              Moncton – 47-18-12-30 -20 56

Brayden Point                   Drafted by Tampa Bay 79th overall                            Moose Jaw – 48  35-53-88  24  36

Josh Jacobs                         Drafted by New Jersey 41st overall                           Sarnia Sting – 67  4-20-24  26  38

Jayce Hawryluk                 Drafted by Florida 32nd overall                                    Brandon WHL – 58  47-59-106 59 101

Looking back at it now, the Sabres could have selected Jayce Hawryluk at 31st overall instead of taking Brendan Lemieux. Hawryluk put up huge points with the Brandon Wheat Kings this past season. The diminutive Brayden Point puts up numbers in the Dub as well.

3.61                                        Sabres drafted Jonas Johansson

Alexis Vanier                      Drafted by San Jose 102nd overall                              Sherbrooke – 61  10-20-30  -7  49

Hunter Smith                     Drafted by Calgary 54th overall                                    Stockton AHL – 43  2-5-7  1  81

Matt Mistele                      Drafted by Los Angeles 180th overall                        Osh / Sarnia – 61  33-25-58  -6  45

Matt Mistele was drafted late in 2014. His draft year numbers were nothing great, but his prior season, 2012-13, he was a very productive player. In four OHL seasons, Mistele has scored at least 33 goals in three of them.

Jonas Johansson provides good depth for Buffalo’s prospect pipeline at goaltender. Perhaps he will be bumped up to the SHL next season and play with Brynas.

5.121                                     Sabres drafted Max Willman                                     Brown Univ. – 29-3-8-11 -15 10

Scott Savage                      Undrafted                                                                           Boston College – 38  1-15-16  13  12

Edgars Kulda                      Drafted by Phoenix 193rd overall                                               Riga Dynamo

Colby Cave                          Undrafted                                                                           Providence AHL – 63  11-13-24  -3  27

I’d rather Scott Savage in the system than Max Willman.

6.151                                     Sabres drafted Chris Brown                                        Boston College – 41-2-9-11 5 8

Joe Wegwerth                  Drafted by Florida 92nd overall                                    Notre Dame – 30  1-3-4  -4  18

Zach Nagelvoort               Drafted by Edmonton 111th overall                           UMich – 11  5-2-1  2.99  .893  0

Matthew Weis                  Undrafted                                                                           Ohio State – 34  11-21-32  -4 1 4

Chris Brown is relegated to 3rd and 4th line duty on a very strong, very talented Boston College team.

7.181                                     Sabres drafted Victor Olofsson                                 MODO – 49-14-15-29 -1 6

Dexter Dancs                     Undrafted                                                                           UMich – 33  7-10-17  10  31

Kevin Spinozzi                   Undrafted                                                                           Sarnia Sting – 59  3-10-13  17  66

J.J. Piccinich                        Drafted by Toronto 103rd overall                               London Knights – 66  30-36-66  23  19

Sabres may have a darkhorse gem with Victor Olofsson. After having to endure the incompetence of the MODO squad in Sweden, he has been moved to Frolunda. Frolunda was ranked second best during the SHL regular season, and MODO has been relegated to a lower league.

2013 Mock Draft

1.8

Elias Lindholm                                    Drafted by Carolina 5th overall                    Carolina NHL – 82  11-28-39  -23  24

Sean Monahan                                 Drafted by Calgary 6th overall                      Calgary NHL – 81  27-36-63  -6  18

Rasmus Ristolainen                        Drafted by Buffalo 8th overall                     Buffalo NHL – 82  9-32-41  -21  33

Darnell Nurse                                    Drafted by Edmonton 7th overall                               Edmonton NHL – 69  3-7-10  -13  60

Valeri Nichushkin                             Drafted by Dallas 10th overall                       Dallas NHL – 79  9-20-29  2  12

Sabres made the right pick with Ristolainen. They drafted their anchor on defense and Rasmus will be the focal point on the blueline much like Eichel and Reinhart will be at forward. The Sabres are building a very young and talented core.

1.16                                                        Sabres drafted Nikita Zadorov                   San Antonio AHL – 52-10-19-29 -9 90

Adam Erne                                          Drafted by Tampa Bay 33rd overall            Syracuse AHL – 59  14-15-29  -18  74

Bo Horvat                                            Drafted by Vancouver 9th overall               Vancouver NHL – 82  16-24-40  -30  18

Curtis Lazar                                         Drafted by Ottawa 17th overall                   Ottawa NHL – 76  6-14-20  -1  18

Anthony Mantha                             Drafted by Detroit 20th overall                    Grand Rapids AHL – 60  21-24-45  13  32

Josh Morrissey                                  Drafted by Winnipeg 13th overall               Manitoba AHL – 57  3-19-22  -9  47

The one player that is intriguing for where Buffalo picked is Anthony Mantha. He has been referred to as lazy and that dropped him down to being taken 20th overall by Detroit. Having some red flags attached to him ended up having him picked in the bottom half of the first round. Talent-wise he’s a very good player and should make an impact with Red Wings in the next couple years.

Zad the Impaler has had a rough go of things. At some point he will earn a regular spot on the Colorado blueline.

2.38

J.T. Compher                                     Drafted by Buffalo 35th overall                  UMich – 38  16-47-63  +35  28

Laurent Dauphin                              Drafted by Phoenix 39th overall                  Springfield AHL – 65  11-12-23  -4  72

Jacob de la Rose                               Drafted by Montreal 34th overall               St. John’s AHL – 34  7-7-14  -5  18

Ian McCoshen                                   Drafted by Florida 31st overall                     Boston College – 40  6-15-21  30  86

William Carrier                                   Drafted by St. Louis 57th overall                  Rochester AHL – 56  13-17-30  14  48

Bad Luck Compher. He may be the player that people end up “regretting” in the Ryan O’Reilly trade. Compher had a fantastic season with the University of Michigan and will one day find his way onto the Avalanche roster.

2.52                                                        Sabres drafted Justin Bailey                       Rochester AHL – 70-20-25-45 -7 16

Emile Poirier                                       Drafted by Calgary 22nd overall                   Stockton AHL – 59  12-17-29  -11  51

Adam Tambellini                              Drafted by NY Rangers 65th overall           Hartford AHL – 74  17-15-32  1  24

Dillon Heatherington                      Drafted by Columbus 50th overall              Lake Erie AHL – 63  3-16-19  17  50

Tristan Jarry                                        Drafted by Pittsburgh 44th overall             WB/Scranton AHL – 33 17-13-3  2.69  .905  5

Samuel Morin                                    Drafted by Philadelphia 11th overall          Lehigh Valley AHL – 75  4-15-19  -5  118

Drafting Bailey was the right pick. His skating ability has improved each year and now he’s a threat on the outside and able to break past the defense. He’ll stick his nose in front of the net and do the dirty work at a high rate of speed.

Tristan Jarry is a talented goalie, but will have a difficult time moving past Matt Murray on the Penguins’ depth chart.

3.69

Jonathan Diaby                                 Drafted by Nashville 64th overall                                Cincinnati ECHL – 43  3-3-6  4  51

Nick Baptiste                                     Drafted by Buffalo 69th overall                  Rochester AHL – 62  13-15-28  -3  30

Vincent Dunn                                    Drafted by Ottawa 138th overall                 Evansville ECHL – 55  13-14-27  -4  154

Brett Pesce                                         Drafted by Carolina 66th overall                  Carolina NHL – 69  4-12-16  -7  16

Marko Dano                                       Drafted by Columbus 27th overall              Chi / Wpg NHL – 34  5-5-10  -7  10

Baptiste has a ways to go. Next season will be very important for him to show progression. Bailey and Hudson Fasching aren’t going to wait for him to improve.

5.129 / 130                                          Sabres drafted Cal Petersen and Gustav Possler

Myles Bell                                           Drafted by New Jersey 160th overall        Not playing pro hockey

Sven Andrighetto                            Drafted by Montreal 86th overall               Montreal NHL – 44  7-10-17  1  6

Brendan Harms                                 Never drafted                                                   Bemidji State – 39  8-17-25  -6  10

Zach Sanford                                      Drafted by Washington 61st overall          Boston College – 41  13-26-39  27  44

Marcus Hogberg                               Drafted by Ottawa 78th overall                   Linkopings – 28  15-12  2.31  .911  2

Cal Petersen should challenge Linus Ullmark for the starting goalie job in 2-3 years, unless Lehner has nailed down the job. Petersen was a great pick at 129th overall. He’s rock solid for Notre Dame. Very quick side-to-side and doesn’t give up rebounds.

5.143                                                     Sabres drafted Anthony Florentino         Providence – 31-5-7-12  12  37

Matt Buckles                                      Drafted by Florida 98th overall                     Cornell – 31  8-3-11  -3  4

Teemu Kivihalme                             Drafted by Nashville 140th overall              Colorado College – 35  3-12-15  -33  28

Avery Peterson                                                Drafted by Minnesota 167th overall          Nebraska-Omaha – 14  0-1-1  -5  6

Carter Verhaeghe                            Drafted by Toronto 82nd overall                 Bridgeport AHL – 30  6-9-15  3  6

Tyler Lewington                                                Drafted by Washington 204th overall        Hershey AHL – 31 3-3-6  9  89

6.159                                                     Sabres drafted Sean Malone                      Harvard – 27-10-9-19  11  8

Jason Salvaggio                                 Undrafted                                                           Univ. of New Hampshire – 22  3-3-6  1  14

Zach Glienke                                      Undrafted                                                           St. John’s Univ. (Minnesota)

Patrik Bartosak                                  Drafted by Los Angeles 146th overall        Vitkovice HC – 10  6-4  3.04  .893  0

Connor Rankin                                  Undrafted                                                           Norfolk ECHL – 13  2-1-3  -4  0

Wiley Sherman                                 Drafted by Boston 150th overall                  Harvard – 31  4-6-10  9  10

7.189                                                     Sabres drafted Eric Locke                             St. Francis Univ. – 28-14-21-35 15 60

Alex Kile                                               Undrafted                                                           UMich – 38  16-18-34  8  37

Timotej Sille                                       Undrafted                                                           Playing in Austria

Nolan de Jong                                   Drafted by Minnesota 197th overall          UMich – 38  0-11-11  22  14

Willie Raskob                                     Undrafted                                                           Minn-Duluth  36  2-11-13  7  28
